This announcement is being advertised under delegated examining procedures and is open to all U.S. citizens. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

All positions may not be filled or they may be filled at different times depending on budget, hiring needs, and requirements. These positions are temporary and are expected to last for approximately 6 months. These positions have no promotion potential, if you want to be considered for a higher grade you must apply for the higher grade.

### Responsibilities

Interpretation Rangers work with diverse audiences in a variety of park settings that include coastal, temperate rainforest, grasslands, coniferous forests,subalpine, and alpine ecosystems. As communication professionals, interpreters are responsible for developing and presenting a variety of programs including guided walks, illustrated talks (PowerPoint amphitheater and campfire programs)and demonstrations. Programs are developed using principles of the NPS thematic interpretation model necessitating thorough research, familiarity with and creative use of delivery techniques and a desire to strive for interpretive excellence. Interpretation rangers incorporate informal interpretation techniques while providing information and orientation services in visitor centers, ranger stations and while roving in the field. Interpretation rangers perform cashier duties and assist with a variety of special projects to support park goals. Rangers actively promote the safety of park visitors and stewardship of park resources in all interactions, and may also be the initial contact for accident reporting and emergency assistance.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather from snow, wind, and rain to sun and heat. Work involves standing for long periods of time, walking over rough and uneven terrain and living in close quarters with co-workers.

**Additional duties for GS-5:** You will present informal and formal talks; lead guided tours and respond to visitor inquiries for information, direction and guidance.

**Additional duties for GS-7:** You will perform duties listed at the GS-5 level as well as provide on-the-job training and assistance to team members.

* Wearing a National Park Service uniform is required.

* Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

* You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.

* Government housing may be available.

* You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

* You may be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

* You may be required to work overtime.

### Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/29/2017 (unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement).

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you possess either the specialized experience or the education as described below. Equivalent combinations of experience and education may also be used to qualify.

**For the GS-05 grade level**

**A.** One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. **-OR- B**. A 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work. One year of full time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. **-OR- C**. Equivalent combinations of education and experience.

**For the GS-07 grade level**

**A.** One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader, work in a park, recreation or conservation area, environmental education, history and/or cultural resources education, and natural sciences education. Work will include independent research and presentation. **-OR- B.** You must possess one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation. One year of full time graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours. -**OR- C.**Equivalent combinations of education and experience.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. In order to receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (**month/year**), and the number of hours worked per week.

Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.

**PHYSICAL DEMANDS:** The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.

**WORK ENVIRONMENT:** The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.

In addition to the salary listed above, the Islands of Guam & Saipan are authorized a 13.70% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
